About RESIPE
RESIPE is a co-financed project by the European Commission through the Sixth
Framework Programme (2002-2006) for research, technological development and
demonstration (RTD).
The range of energy crops that may be used in sugar production is extremely wide
and diverse. The project’s aim is to contribute to the reform of the European
sugar industry assigning them the role of supplier of low-cost heat and
electricity via cogeneration and bioethanol for the transport sector as well as
other valuable materials, using polygeneration technology.
A number of innovative polygeneration systems based on sugar beet, sweet sorghum
or other energy crops are under development world widely. These systems are
based on available technology, integrated into the sugar industry and are ready
to be demonstrated in many European countries including UK and Italy, as well as
in Latin America, Africa and Asia.
The project has been designed to collect, analyse and disseminate technical
knowledge and experience from the implementation of polygeneration based on
energy crops under the concept of bio-refineries in sugar industry with certain
energy, environmental, societal and economic benefits. The targeted sector of
the sugar industry will be that of Greece, Italy, Sweden and Poland. However,
the project results will be disseminated widely to the EU sugar industry, since
there is a list of sugar plants around Europe who have already expressed their
interest in the project results and in participating in information
dissemination activities.
