2nd RESIPE Study Tour in the ethanol and alcohol plant of Cristanol and the
sugar factory of Cristal Union in Bazancourt
The 2nd RESIPE study tour took place on the 17th of February 2009 in the ethanol
& alcohol plant of Cristanol and the sugar factory of Cristal Union, which are
located in Bazancourt, France. Cristal Union is a grower-owned cooperatives
group, which produces about 18% of the sugar beet acreages in France and focuses
on the production of industrial and crystal sugar and the production of alcohol
and ethanol, whereas Cristanol is a joint venture of Cristal Union (55% of
capital) and Blétanol (union of 25 cereal co-operatives belonging to Champagne
Céréales and holding the 45%) dedicated to the production of ethanol and
alcohol, from both sugar beet and wheat feedstock.
Representatives from Greece, Poland and Sweden had the opportunity to view the
facilities and to be informed on Cristanol’s activities in the field of biofuels
and other by-products. The study tour was very interesting and informative for
the participants since the plants’ directors willingly shared their valuable
experience and know-how on ethanol, sugar and other by-products production
processes.
